Echoing, Pitch Matching

Learning Objective

Students will be able to listen to a musical phrase (call) and echo it back accurately (response), maintaining pitch and rhythm.

5 MIN

Start with simple 4-beat body percussion (clap-clap-pat-pat). Then transition to nonsense syllables (Doo-dah, Doo-dah). Students echo exactly.

Use What is an Echo? Slides. Explain that an echo happens when sound "bounces" back. In music, we call this "Call and Response".

10 MIN

Teach a simple echo song using the Echo Song Lyrics Sheet (e.g., "Down by the Bay" or "The Other Day I Met a Bear"). Practice phrase by phrase.

5 MIN

Use Follow the Leader Game instructions. Choose a student "leader" to create a movement or sound that the class must echo.

5 MIN

Listen to a recording of a canyon echo. Have students whisper their names and imagine them bouncing off the walls of the classroom.
