Warm-up: So-Mi Flashcards

Quickly review So and Mi using hand signs and singing. Use "The Secret Language" slides for a fast-paced game of "Follow the Hands."

Introduce: La joins the party!

Show the hand sign for "La" (relaxed hand, palm down, like a roof). Explain that La is higher than So. Sing "So - La - So - Mi" patterns for students to echo.

Activity: Solfege Dice Roll

Students work in pairs. They roll a "Solfege Die" (labeled with S, M, L) four times to create a melody. They must sing their 4-note melody to their partner using hand signs.

Mystery Song Challenge

Distribute the Mystery Song notation. Students look at the So, Mi, and La positions on the staff and try to figure out what song it is (Hint: It's a playground favorite like "Star Light, Star Bright" or "Rain Rain Go Away").

Assessment & Differentiation

Check for Understanding

Can students sing the interval from So to La correctly? (It's a major 2nd). Watch for students who try to sing La lower than So.

Differentiation

Support: Keep patterns to just 2 notes (S-L or M-S) before moving to 3.
Challenge: Add a simple rhythm (quarter notes and eighth notes) to their 4-note composition.
