Analysis & Reflection: Expected Responses

1. Why choose steel over wood for high winds/earthquakes?

Steel has a superior strength-to-weight ratio and high tensile strength. Unlike wood, which can snap or rot over time, steel is dimensionally stable and can flex slightly during seismic events without failing structurally. It doesn't rot or attract pests that might weaken a wood frame.

2. Embodied Carbon: Concrete vs. Wood?

Definition: The CO2 emitted during the lifecycle (mining, transport, manufacturing) of a material.
Comparison: Concrete has a very high embodied carbon because cement production requires extreme heat and chemical reactions that release massive CO2. Wood has a low (or even negative) footprint because trees absorb CO2 as they grow.

3. Sustainability Trade-offs?

Acceptable Perspectives:

• Yes: It is sustainable because its 200-year lifespan means it doesn't need to be replaced, saving materials in the long run (durability as sustainability).
• No: If the immediate carbon cost is too high, we may reach climate tipping points before the long-term benefit is realized.
