Teacher facilitation Guide
First Grade Dolch
Lesson Objective
Students will recognize and accurately read 41 high-frequency Dolch First Grade sight words using visual cues, context sentences, and repetitive practice.
Materials Needed
- Sight Word Stars Slides: For whole-group instruction.
- Sight Word Stars Flashcards: Printed and cut for small groups/individual use.
- Scissors: For cutting the flashcards.
- Envelopes or Rings: For storing student card sets.
Quick Tips
Focus on 5-8 new words per week to avoid overwhelm.
Encourage students to use the "Heart Word" method for irregular spellings.
Use the emoji cues as a "scaffold" that is eventually faded out.
Instructional Steps

Introduction (The Slides)
Project the slide deck and introduce the "Sight Word Stars" concept. Explain that these are "Star Words" because they appear everywhere in books.
"When we see a star word, we don't always sound it out. We know it by heart!"

Guided Practice (Look, Think, Say)
Use the practice slides. For each word:
- Look: Eyes on the word.
- Think: Process the letters and picture cue.
- Say: Read the word together in a "Stage Whisper."
- Context: Read the sentence at the bottom to see the word in action.

The Lightning Round
Use the Lightning Round slides to build fluency. Challenge students to read the words without the emoji cues. Speed up as they get more comfortable.

Individual Application (Flashcards)
Provide students with their own card sets. Have them partner up and "test" each other. If a student knows the word instantly, they put it in their "Star Pile." If they need the cue, it stays in the "Practice Pile."
Support & Extension
For Struggling Readers
Have students trace the letters of the word with their finger while saying the word aloud (Multisensory approach). Focus on just 3 words at a time.
For Advanced Readers
Ask students to create their own original sentences for each word or find the words in their current independent reading books.
