The Hook: Mystery Box
Introduce the "Word Detective" theme. Place a few items in a "Mystery Box" (a toy car, a hat, a book). Pull them out one by one. Ask: "What is this?" Explain these are all things. Then, ask students to jump, clap, or wiggle. Explain these are actions. Explain that today, they are detectives hunting for Nouns and Verbs.

Direct Instruction: Defining the Terms
Use the Grammar Case Slides to define:
- Noun: A person (teacher), place (park), or thing (apple).
- Verb: An action word (run, jump, sleep).
Teacher Tip: Use TPR (Total Physical Response). Have students point to their brain for nouns (naming things) and move their arms for verbs (doing things).

Guided Practice: Case File Sort
Create a T-Chart on chart paper labeled "Nouns" and "Verbs". Show various word cards or call out words. Have students come up and place the word in the correct column.
Example Words: dog, run, school, sing, pizza, dance, boy, jump.

Independent Practice: Word Hunt Case File
Distribute the Word Hunt Case File. Students search for hidden nouns and verbs in the word search. After finding the words, they must categorize them into the correct detective files at the bottom of the page.
Circulate and assist students who struggle with the word search layout.

Closing: Case Closed
Gather the detectives. Ask: "Can a noun run?" (No, the person or thing does the running). "What is a verb?" (An action). Have students share one noun and one verb they found in their hunt.
Differentiation Strategies
Support:
Provide a "Cheat Sheet" with pictures for noun/verb icons. Allow students to work in pairs for the word search.
