The Incredible Adaptations of Llamas
High Altitude Heroes
Survival Tools
Adaptation
A special feature or behavior that helps a living thing survive in its environment.
Why do llamas need special tools to live in the Andes Mountains?
The Andean Home
Extreme Cold
Temperatures drop below freezing at night. Brrr!
Thin Air
There is less oxygen at high altitudes, making it hard to breathe.
Rocky Cliffs
Steep, slippery, and jagged rocks are everywhere.
How does a llama stay warm, breathe, and walk here?
Adaptation #1
The Super-Coat
Two Layers
A soft inner layer for warmth and a coarse outer layer to repel water and dirt.
UV Protection
High in the mountains, the sun is very strong. Thick wool prevents sunburn!
"Like wearing a permanent sleeping bag!"
Adaptation #2
Oxygen Engines
Unique Cells
Llamas have more red blood cells than other mammals. Their cells are also oval-shaped instead of round.
This helps them carry more oxygen even when the air is "thin."
Large Hearts
A llama's heart is very large for its body size.
It pumps blood efficiently, allowing them to hike steep mountains without getting tired.
Adaptation #3
Mountain Grippers
Two Toes
Llamas have two toes with leathery pads on the bottom that act like "snow tires" for rocks.
Sharp Nails
Their long, strong toenails help them dig into the dirt and gravel for extra grip.
Unlike horses with hard hooves, llama feet are flexible and soft to feel the ground!
Watch Out!
The Famous Spit
Spitting is a behavioral adaptation used for defense.
- It warns away predators like mountain lions.
- It helps settle arguments with other llamas.
- It smells terrible because it's actually stomach contents!
